THE CANOPUS SERIES
About
The Canopus series was inspired by a visit to the Ancient Egyptian Gallery, Near Eastern Gallery, and Greek Gallery at the Boston Museum of Fine Art in my last year of graduate work. I had wandered down from the more contemporary galleries upstairs in a sort of fugue state, feeling completely untethered from the work I had just seen. In the classical galleries, I was struck by the timeless and cross cultural quality of the forms of the pieces on display. The recurrence of the winged figure, the iconic vessel forms — beautifully refined and simple, and the tapered keyhole openings — doorways of a kind, symbolizing the transition from one state of being to another. Each spoke to me in ways that all the contemporary art noise and confusion upstairs utterly failed to do. The next day I went into the studio and this series began.
